Rahim was introduced to Nitin Kasare soon after Passport's murder. Nana had shortlisted another target. This time it was businessman Abdul Patel. Flamboyant Patel operated from Heera Panna shopping centre, a stone's throw from Haji Ali. Nana had information that Patel was rubbing shoulders with some cricketers, who were close to his rivals. The task of killing Patel was assigned to Kasare. Rahim was to gather information about the target.

Kasare was unlike any other hitman. He had his own ways of studying his target. Dressed in his favourite 'battlegear', that of an attractive woman, Kasare would visit the potential scene of crime during the day, for a thorough recce. Then he would return at night to strike. Ironically, his eye-catching disguise, also helped him blend in and escape.

Just about 5'2", and quite handsome, Kasare would dress up as a Punjabi girl, donning a colourful and pretty churidar kurta, and would visit residential complexes and shopping zones that his target frequented. He would walk like a woman, mimicking female mannerisms, his clean-shaven chikna appearance working to his benefit and raising no suspicions.

Kasare was far too colourful and energetic for Rahim. It was difficult to deal with his quick wit. Within minutes, Kasare could loot a shop at gunpoint. Then cautiously, after donning yet another disguise, he would return to loot the neighbouring shop, or a businessman in the neighbourhood.

Rahim began shadowing Patel soon after the task was assigned to him. He made several trips to the shopping mall to study everything about the target. The information was shared with Kasare, who also made murder look like fun. One night Rahim and Kasare tailed Patel to Tapas bar near Mumbai Central station. Kasare made his way to the dance floor, barely a few feet away from his prey. He could have whipped out the gun tucked under his shirt and pulled the trigger in the crowded bar. But, Kasare was distracted by the loud music and the pretty bar girls. "How can he escape? We will take him some other day," he told Rahim nonchalantly.

"I guess God wants him to live for a few more days," replied Rahim. "How will you explain this to Nana?" he added.

"Kaam to ho raha hai. I will tell him that the task will be accomplished soon," said Kasare.

Originally from Shrivardhan village in Raigad district, Kasare was first named in the history sheet for a street fight in 1988. Then he went on to pick pockets before joining a gang of robbers. Kasare, Borade, and Akkapada were involved in stealing more than 20 kg gold and 103 kg silver, all worth Rs 1 crore, from a jeweller's shop in 1994. Kasare was hired by Nana after news of his exploits spread in the underworld. The skilled robber was weaned away from his old Harish-Jatan gang on a Rs 2 lakh-per-month contract. Kasare moved up in the hierarchy of Nana Company with two killings in the suburbs.
